With the latest trailer for Greta Gerwig’s meta-tastic, Margot Robbie-starring ‘Barbie’, we’re learning more and more about Barbie’s world and the journey she’ll be embarking on.
There are definite ‘Lego Movie’ vibes still in play here (which is a good thing, in our opinion), having plenty of fun with the concepts of the famous doll over the years.
What do we find out about ‘Barbie’ in the new trailer?
Robbie, of course, plays the title character, a Barbie girl in a Barbie world: things are plastic, it’s fantastic. But as the trailer opens, she’s starting to question elements of her world, even as strange happenings start to occur. Her shower at home is suddenly running cold. She no longer floats daintily down from her roof. And, most shockingly, her feet, which are normally raised to fit squarely into the traditional Barbie high heels are –– gasp! –– now flat.
Which, somewhat naturally, leads her on a quest to discover the truth about her existence, even as she’s initially unwilling (in meeting with Kate McKinnon’s rough-looking alt-Barbie, who appears to know a lot about what is happening, Robbie wants to choose high heels over flats, only to be told that she needs to think again).
Yet she still sets out in a mission to discover what is actually happening with the ‘real’ world, only for Ken (Ryan Gosling) to tag along. He’s clearly crushing on our heroine, but she mostly seems oblivious of his feelings.
We’re treated to more of a look at Barbie’s interaction with our world, including a rollerblading trip along the Venice Beach boardwalk in Los Angeles that ends in a trip to the police station when Barbie punches out a groper (hilariously, Ken’s ID board reads “and Ken”).
There’s also more of a look at Will Ferrell, playing the boss of Mattel, who is horrified that someone who is ostensibly a toy has shown up in reality.

Who else is in ‘Barbie’?
We know that the likes of Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa and Kingsley Ben-Adir are playing Kens, while Dua Lipa, Issa Rae and Alexandra Shipp are other Barbies (their character posters hilariously listing the Barbies with their specialist skills or jobs and the Kens as simply “Ken”, in keeping with the toys).
And then there are the humans in the film, including America Ferrera and Emerald Fennell, who is playing a pregnant woman named Midge.
But wait! The ensemble list is still not done. We can also expect Emma Mackey, Hari Nef, Ana Cruz Kayne, Sharon Rooney, Ritu Arya, Nicola Coughlan, Scott Evans, Michael Cera, Helen Mirren (as the film’s narrator), Ariana Greenblatt, Jamie Demetriou and Connor Swindells.
‘Barbie’ is looking more and more intriguing, and certainly looks to have more on its mind than just a fun, neon-pink peek into the doll’s world, all while including plenty of laughs and even an Indigo Girls track. Needle drops rarely come more eclectic.
‘Barbie’ drives into theaters on July 21st.
