Neill Blomkamp’s films have pushed both the limits of technology and FX. Each film has looked like they were right out of a video game. The weapons in Elysium, Chappie and District 9 have looked like they would be great to use in video games. It looks like the director will be putting all of that aesthetic to work soon with a new game being developed by both himself and Gunzilla Games.
Off the Grid is set to reinvent battle royale as a whole. It sets out to create an experience that is part single player narrative progression, part multiplayer battle royale with 150 players all going PVP and even player versus environment sections. The battlefield is also set to be changing throughout base don the players actions.
Off the Grid’s official description goes like this:
Dive into the heat of a covert corporate war in Off The Grid, a cyberpunk Battle Royale 2.0 multiplayer shooter where you shape the story and the gameplay. Unfolding on a dystopian tropical island, OTG sends you on head-spinning assassination and sabotage missions to the greater glory and market share of your chosen faction. Tool up for 2023: it’s about to get bloody!
“With OTG, our ambition is not only to create the Battle Royale 2.0 by adding deep player progression, but to build an evolving world designed to take on a life of its own, changing in unexpected ways each time a player rejoins the game.” Blomkamp said. “With an innovative approach to the Battle Royale core session flow and a deep narrative experience, we add purpose to each element of the game, allowing players to revisit the OTG world repeatedly where there is always something new to find and explore, and for us to expand upon.”
Well, Off the Grid just shot up on our list of most anticipated games. For now, it is promising a lot and its honestly nothing that feels concrete. But, I’m mainly paying attention to the fact that Blomkamp is involved and I’ve always wanted him to make a video game.
If you haven’t seen his shorts on OATS Studios, you should watch those asap (they are on Netflix). Each one could be its own video game. Especially one titled Firebase. Some really brilliantly fun sci-fi horror stuff.
We will have to wait to see what happens next with Off the Grid. We will be sure to keep you updated with all things as they arrive.
