“Art & creativity is something that is very important to him. It’s what makes us human.” HBO debuted the official trailer for a documentary film titled AKA Mr Chow (or a.k.a. Mr. Chow), a profile of the famous restaurateur. This recently premiered at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival and it will play on HBO/Max later this month. “Meet the man behind the name.” The film is a vibrant portrait of the artist, actor, and famed restaurateur Michael Chow. You may know his restaurants, but most have probably never eaten at them – they’re very fancy, exclusive places. His restaurants are located in London, New York, Beverly Hills, Miami, and Las Vegas. With his signature circular glasses and mustache, Michael Chow (born as Zhou Yinghua in 1930s Shanghai before moving to London) is an exuberant force at the crossroads between eccentricity and sophistication. Now in his 80s, but vibrant as ever, Chow leads us through the story of his own life. I like the animated segments of this. And that he’s finally embracing his artist side, coming out of his shell, so to say.
Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Nick Hooker’s doc AKA Mr. Chow, direct from YouTube:
The HBO Documentary Film AKA Mr. Chow details the vibrant and varied life of Michael Chow. Born Zhou Yinghua in 1930s Shanghai, he would use creativity to triumph over childhood trauma, personal loss, and systemic prejudice, growing up to become the actor and artist before inventing a new identity, Mr. Chow, when he opens the first of his iconic restaurants. Having found fame and fortune in the West, Mr. Chow celebrates his Chinese roots and finds catharsis by returning to painting, reemerging as the artist M. AKA Mr. Chow is directed by American doc filmmaker Nick Hooker, co-director of Everything Is Copy, and director of the doc film Agnelli, plus work on the series “Tea at the Beatrice with Glenn O’Brien” and “Face to Grace” previously. A Pulse Films Production; produced by Diane Quon. This initially premiered at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival last month but hasn’t played anywhere else. HBO will debut the AKA Mr. Chow doc streaming on Max + on HBO starting on October 22nd, 2023. Anyone visited his restaurants?
