Elon Musk has been in the headlines a little bit as of late. If you happen to use Twitter, you may have heard a bit about him the last couple of weeks. Outside of that though, Musk is also known for just generally doing cool shit that a lot of people tend to hate on. But I digress. Video game maestro and Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima recently Tweeted that he was going to watch a horror movie before bedtime, but changed his mind quickly to reading a book instead. Well, Musk responded and as usual he had something to say that started a bit of debate.
Musk responded by saying that video games are scarier than any horror movies are. He then gave some pretty damn good games to backup his point.
Dead Space 2, F.E.A.R 2 and Bioshock. Musk responded. Like I said, those are some pretty great points for games that have the capability to make you jump right out of your seat during gameplay. Especially, Dead Space 2. The zero gravity scares in that game alone are enough to chill you to and through the bone.
But, the interaction did make me question. Are video games scarier than movies? Is the visceral experience of playing a game more terrifying than sitting down to get lost in the sorcery of a good horror film? Are they even the same sort of scares?
So, with Elon and Hideo’s Twitter comments freshly in mind. What do you think is a more terrifying experience? How do you prefer to get your scares? Horror video games or horror movies? Obviously the one rule here is that you cannot say “both.” Because, well. That’s a boring answer.
