“I never wanted to be saved…” Shout Studios has revealed an official trailer for an indie western titled The Dead Don’t Hurt, written and directed by and also starring Viggo Mortensen (directing his second film following Falling). This first premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival last year, and it also played at the Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia in Mexico. Set in the 1860s, fiercely independent French Canadian Vivienne Le Coudy embarks on a relationship with Danish immigrant Holger Olsen. When he leaves to fight in the Civil War, she must fend for herself in lawless town run by ruthless criminals. Vicky Krieps stars as Vivienne, joined by Viggo Mortensen, Danny Huston, Garrett Dillahunt, and Solly McLeod. Both a tragic love story and a nuanced depiction of the conflict between revenge and forgiveness, Mortensen’s The Dead Don’t Hurt is a portrait of a passionate woman determined to stand up for herself in an unforgiving world dominated by ruthless men. The film has received mostly positive reviews out of the festivals. It looks like a tragedy about criminals and good vs. evil and how building a good home is often the best one can do.

A story of star-crossed lovers on the western U.S. frontier in the 1860s. Vivienne Le Coudy (Vicky Krieps) is a fiercely independent woman who embarks on a relationship with Danish immigrant Holgen Olsen (Viggo Mortensen). After meeting Olsen in San Francisco, she agrees to travel with him to his home near the quiet town of Elk Flats, Nevada, where they start a life together. The outbreak of the U.S. Civil War separates them when Olsen makes a fateful decision to fight for the Union. This leaves Vivienne to fend for herself in a place controlled by corrupt Mayor Rudolph Schiller (Danny Huston) and his unscrupulous business partner, powerful rancher Alfred Jeffries (Garrett Dillahunt). His violent, wayward son Weston (Solly McLeod) aggressively pursues Vivienne, who is determined to resist his unwanted advances. The Dead Don’t Hurt is written and directed by the Oscar-nominated, beloved Danish-American actor / filmmaker Viggo Mortensen, making his second feature film after directing Falling (2020) before this. He produced both of these films as well, plus a few other projects. It’s also produced by Jeremy Thomas and Regina Solórzano. It was shot up in British Colombia & Ontario, Canada and in Durango, Mexico. The film initially premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival last year. Shout Studios will release Mortensen’s The Dead Don’t Hurt in select US theaters starting on May 31st, 2024 coming soon. Who wants to watch this?
