“Every second of every day you make a choice that can change your life.” Sony Classics posted an updated 2024 official trailer for the 4K re-release of this German classic Run Lola Run, which originally debuted in 1998 some 26 years ago. Anyone who loves cinema already knows and has seen this movie, and it’s still as thrilling & exciting to watch today as it was back then. It played at Sundance 1999 (and won the Audience Award there) and also screened at the 1998 Venice & Toronto Film Festivals. After her boyfriend botches a money handover, Lola has 20 minutes to bring 100,000 DM to him or he robs a store. If the money is not returned, there will be consequences. We see three possible scenarios, depending on Lola’s encounters. She races through the streets of Berlin to find the money and bring it to him on the other side of the city before it’s too late. Franka Potente and Moritz Bleibtru star in Tykwer’s kinetic Berlin thriller. While the film initially premiered 26 years ago, they’re celebrating the 25th anniversary of its original US opening in 1999. Roger Ebert gave the film 3 stars in his original review: “I would not want to see a sequel to the film, and at 81 minutes it isn’t a second too short, but what it does, it does cheerfully, with great energy, and very well.”
Here’s the 2024 trailer (+ poster) for the 4K re-release of Tom Tykwer’s Run Lola Run, from YouTube:
Lola (Franka Potente) answers a call from her boyfriend Manni (Moritz Bleibtru), a small-time courier for a big-time gangster. He has a problem: His boss is coming to pick up 100,000 Deutsche Marks in 20 mins, and he doesn’t have the money. With Manni’s life on the line, Lola must run through the streets of Berlin to reach him and somehow also pick up 100,000 marks along the way, making split-second decisions and encountering acquaintances, family, and strangers. As the clock ticks down, the tiniest choices become life-altering (or life-ending), and the fine line between fate and fortune begins to blur… Run Lola Run, also known as Lola Rennt in German, is written and directed by acclaimed German filmmaker Tom Tykwer, his fourth feature film at the time after Winter Sleepers (1997) and just before The Princess and the Warrior (2000). Produced by Stefan Arndt, Gebhard Henke, and Andreas Schreitmüller. The film originally opened first in Germany in August 1998, premiering at both the Venice & Toronto Film Festivals that same year. It eventually opened in US theaters in June 1999 after playing at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival. SPC will re-release Tykwer’s Run Lola Run in select US theaters starting June 7th, 2024. Worth watching again?
