“Are you sure she wants to be found?” A very good question. Mubi has revealed the official trailer for an indie drama titled Crossing, set for release this summer in select US theaters (and eventually streaming on Mubi for everyone else). This first premiered at the 2024 Berlin Film Festival earlier this year, and stopped by the BFI Flare London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival in March. From acclaimed director Levan Akin (And Then We Danced), this is a moving & tender tale of identity, acceptance and unlikely connection that transcends borders. Lia, a retired teacher, has promised to find her long-lost niece, Tekla – a trans woman she hasn’t seen in a long time. Her search takes her to Istanbul where she meets Evrim, a lawyer fighting for trans rights, and Tekla starts to feel closer than ever. This looks especially beautiful & heartwarming, with some positive reviews out of the fests. Starring Mzia Arabuli, Lucas Kankava, and Deniz Dumanlı. Opening in the US and in more countries including the UK + Europe this summer if anyone wants to give this a look.
Here’s the official trailer (+ festival poster) for Levan Akin’s film Crossing, direct from Mubi’s YouTube:
Crossing is a moving & tender tale of identity, acceptance and unlikely connection that transcends borders & generations. Lia, a retired school teacher living in Georgia, hears from a young neighbour Achi that her long lost niece Tekla, a transgender woman, has crossed the border into Turkey. Hoping to bring her home after a period of estrangement, Lia travels to Istanbul with the unpredictable Achi to find her. Exploring the hidden depths of the city, they cross paths with a transgender lawyer called Evrim, who helps them in their search. Humanistic and compassionate, Akin’s third feature is a heartfelt portrayal of overcoming the degrees of separation that divide us. Crossing is written and directed by Swedish-Georgian filmmaker Levan Akin, director of the films Certain People, The Circle, and And Then We Danced previously, plus episodes of the new series “Interview with the Vampire” most recently. Produced by Mathilde Dedye. This initially premiered at the 2024 Berlin Film Festival earlier this year. Mubi will debut Levan Akin’s Crossing in select US theaters on July 19th, 2024, then streaming on Mubi starting August 30th. Looking good?
