First Teaser for Joe Wright’s Mussolini Series ‘M. Son of the Century’

“We are the new. Every era has one.” Sky TV has revealed the first teaser trailer for the new series titled M. Son of the Century, a chilling look at the rise of fascism in Italy. This series is set to premiere at the 2024 Venice Film Festival later this month. Chronicling the rise of power of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini in a history of a country that surrendered to dictatorship. It’s clearly an examination of how democracy leads to fascism, as is hinted at with this footage in the teaser. Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Antonio Scurati, winner of the Premio Strega. Featuring a techno soundtrack by Tom Rowlands, part of The Chemical Brothers (awesome!!). “You can play with the aesthetics and the form of the piece. The score is going to be this kind of techno score,” Wright told Variety. “And the aesthetics are a kind of mashup between ’90s rave culture and Man with a Movie Camera [1929 seminal avant-garde doc], a great Ukrainian film. It’s Man with a Movie Camera and every gangster movie you’ve ever seen.” Starring Luca Marinelli (The Eight Mountains, Martin Eden) as “M”, with Francesco Russo, Barbara Chichiarelli, Benedetta Cimatti, Lorenzo Zurzolo, Gaetano Bruno, Paolo Pierobon. The story of a nation that fell under the grip of dictatorship and the man who manipulated democracy to rise to power. Luca Marinelli plays Benito Mussolini in the new series titled M – Son of the Century. M is based on Antonio Scurati’s eponymous Premio Strega-winning and international bestselling novel of the same name which traces the birth of fascism in Italy and Mussolini’s ascent with an innovative approach. M. Son of the Century, also known as M. Il figlio del secolo in Italian, is a mini-series directed by acclaimed English filmmaker Joe Wright, director of the movies Pride & Prejudice, Atonement, The Soloist, Hanna, Anna Karenina, Pan, Darkest Hour, The Woman in the Window, and Cyrano previously, and “Nosedive” ep of “Black Mirror”. The screenplay is written by Stefano Bises (Gomorrah, The New Pope) in collaboration with Davide Serino (of 1992, Piano Piano, Burning Hearts). This was filmed entirely at the famed Cinecittà Studios in Rome. Executive produced by Valerio Bonelli, Simone Gattoni, Pablo Larraín, Paolo Sorrentino, Francesco Tatò, and Joe Wright. This series is set to premiere at the 2024 Venice Film Festival coming up soon. It will be streaming in 2025 on Sky TV. No info on any US release yet – stay tuned. First impression?
