“I’ll always protect you.” Warner Bros Japan has revealed their full official trailer for a live-action manga adaptation called Cells at Work!, arriving in Japanese theaters in December. This is a big screen version of a manga series written & illustrated by Akane Shimizu (first published in 2015). It was also made into an anime series already in 2018, though this is a full-on live-action version. “Welcome to the wonderland of the body’s working cells!” Starring Mei Nagano and Takeru Satoh as cells AE3803 and U-1146, respectively, along with Sadao Abe as Shigeru Urushizaki and Mana Ashida as his daughter Niko Urushizaki. “This innovative series, which brings the inner workings of the human body to life by personifying cells, quickly captured the hearts of readers and became a sensation.” With action scenes from action director Takahito Ouchi, known for the live action Rurouni Kenshin series and Yu Yu Hakusho. “A truly original visual feast that must be experienced on the big screen. This winter, embark on a breathtaking journey inside your own body.” This almost seems like an education video you watch in school, but they’ve also made it look properly fun! And totally bonkers! Tons of extras, giant vivid sets, and much more. Might actually be worth a watch?
Here’s the official trailers (+ poster) for Hideki Takeuchi’s Cells at Work!, direct from WB’s YouTube:
The smallest protagonist in cinema history – a human cell! There are a staggering 37 trillion cells in the human body. Red blood cells that carry oxygen, white blood cells that fight bacteria, and countless other cells work tirelessly day and night to protect your health and life. High school student Niko (Mana Ashida) lives with her father, Shigeru (Sadao Abe). Because of Niko’s diligent nature and her healthy lifestyle, the cells inside her body are always working joyfully. Meanwhile, inside Shigeru’s body, the cells are always complaining, exhausted from the brutal working environment, as he leads an irregular & unhealthy life. On the outside they may look like a happy father & daughter, but on the inside their bodily environments couldn’t be more different. As their lively days go on, pathogens start to sneak up into their bodies… The most epic battle in the history of human cells, with the future of Niko & Shigeru at stake, is about to begin!
