Colton Underwood Opens Up About Mental Health Struggles
Bachelor Colton Underwood opened up to People about the struggles he has had with mental health. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Colton found himself in a really dark place. It was so bad he didn’t feel like he had a way out.
He didn’t want to live anymore. Colton was alone in Los Angeles when he tried to end his life. Thankfully it didn’t work. He said, “I woke up the next morning and I remember vividly staring into my dog’s eyes and realizing I needed help. That was my moment of, I have to make some changes because I’m not healthy right now.”
At that point, he knew he needed help. So, Colton got in the car and drove home. He said, “I immediately loaded my dog into my Jeep and drove 15 hours to Colorado to my parents and I told them everything that was going on. The next week I was seeing a therapist and a psychologist and getting on a game plan.”
Why Was He Struggling?
Colton Underwood was struggling in part because of concealing who he really was for so long. It wasn’t until 2021 that he came out to the world. Once he did he was much happier. He is happy but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have issues sometimes.
He recognizes that mental health is a continuous journey. Colton said, “I think that for different people, different things are going to work at different times. I needed peers at times, I needed a therapist at times, I needed a psychologist at times, I needed medication at times.”
It took Colton a long time to seek help for his anxiety and depression. He hopes his own journey can help others be able to speak out and admit they need to get help.
Colton decided to try and help others by becoming the Chief Community Officer for WhiteFlag, a free mental health app that provides specialized and anonymous peer-to-peer support to those struggling.
Since becoming a father, Colton is even more dedicated to making the world a better place for his son.
