“She was a painter of light.” Film Movement has revealed the official trailer for a documentary film called Obsessed with Light, which will begin showing in art house theaters starting in December. It premiered a year ago at the DOC NYC Film Festival and has been playing at many other festivals ever since then. A film that tells the story of American performer Loïe Fuller, an early pioneer of dance, stage lighting and design. As an innovator of modern dance, Loïe Fuller (1862–1928) created a completely new kind of spectacle which combined dance, fabric & movement. She also pioneered the ingenious use of electricity for the stage, even building a glass floor so that she could be lit from below. This is her story. With the voice of Cherry Jones speaking for Fuller. Her style and techniques on stage have gone on to influence culture in so many ways, along with artists and concerts and more. She took out dozens of patents in the U.S., France and UK. Always struggling against a flood of imitators, she sued in court to protect her copyright as early as 1892. It’s such an inspiring true story. I had a chance to watch this doc and it’s wonderful – a truly eye-opening discovery.
Here’s the full trailer (+ posters) for Krayenbühl & Oelbaum’s doc Obsessed with Light, from YouTube:
Obsessed with Light pulls back the curtain on Loïe Fuller (1862-1928), a wildly original performer and pioneer of modern dance. Creating a dialogue between the past and the present, the documentary delves into the astonishing influence Fuller’s work has on contemporary culture including Taylor Swift, Bill T. Jones, Shakira & William Kentridge, Red Hot Chili Peppers, among others. Fuller developed a completely new kind of spectacle which combined dance, fabric and movement. This is about a woman who became famous on her own terms – unapologetic about her body type and open about her sexuality. Obsessed with Light is co-directed and produced by acclaimed doc filmmakers Sabine Krayenbühl & Zeva Oelbaum, also both directors of the doc Letters from Baghdad previously. This initially premiered at the 2023 Rome Film Fest & DOC NYC Film Fest last year. Film Movement opens Obsessed with Light in select US theaters (NY at first) starting on December 6th, 2024 this fall. For more info visit the film’s official site. Curious?
