“I think I like her!” “But you’ve never met anybody before…” Neon has unveiled the full trailer for a unique musical creation called The End, the first narrative feature film directed by the acclaimed doc filmmaker Joshua Oppenheimer (The Act of Killing, The Look of Silence). This cynical take on the end of the world is a Golden Age-style musical about the last human family. Described as a poignant and deeply human musical about a wealthy family living in an ornate bunker in a salt mine. An urgent and unforgettable cautionary tale, The End stars Academy Award-winner Tilda Swinton, Michael Shannon, George MacKay, with Moses Ingram. Featuring original songs from Joshua Schmidt (music) and Joshua Oppenheimer (lyrics). The cast also includes Bronagh Gallagher, Tim McInnerny, and Lennie James. I’ve heard mixed on this – some people love it, some people hate it, as if the movie was trolling the audience the entire time. A musical about a family of rich idiots? Can’t tell if this will actually be worth a watch… or not. Your thoughts?
Here’s the official trailer (+ posters) for Joshua Oppenheimer’s film The End, direct from YouTube:
Original intro via TIFF: “It’s a story about what seems to be the last remaining human family on earth, as they hide in an ornate bunker built deep inside a salt mine after environmental collapse has destroyed society. Oh, and it’s also a sombre musical. George MacKay plays the naive young man who was born in this bunker. In his [short] 20 years of life, he has only heard stories of the outside world. He spends his days working on a dubious book with his father (Michael Shannon), a former energy tycoon, while his mother (Tilda Swinton) frets over the upkeep of the many priceless paintings and artworks adorning their walls. It’s the semblance of a normal (albeit affluent) life. But when a woman (Moses Ingram) from the outside arrives at their doorstep seeking refuge, the family’s delicate dynamic begins to crumble.” Uh oh.
The End is directed by acclaimed American producer / filmmaker Joshua Oppenheimer, director of the two doc films The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence previously, plus many other short films and a few episodes of the “P.O.V.” doc series. The screenplay is by Rasmus Heisterberg & Joshua Oppenheimer. With music by Marius De Vries and Josh Schmidt (original songs). It’s produced by Signe Byrge Sørensen, Joshua Oppenheimer, Tilda Swinton, Viola Fügen, Conor Barry, Flaminio Zadra, Tracy O’Riordan, Ann Lundberg. This initially premiered at the 2024 Telluride & Toronto Film Festivals this fall. Neon opens Oppenheimer’s The End in select US theaters starting December 6th, 2024 coming soon this year.
