“The most beautiful sound I ever heard is the empty, wavey air flows between the trees.” 🌳 Netflix has unveiled a teaser trailer for an acclaimed, award-winning short film titled Makayla’s Voice: A Letter to the World, made by filmmaker Julio Palacio. With awards season at its peak, all the studios are dropping their short films that will likely end up getting Oscar nominations early next year. Makayla’s Voice is a 23-minute short documentary film that first premiered at the 2024 Slamdance Film Festival, and it also won Best Doc Short at the Tribeca Film Festival. Makayla is a teenage girl who has spent her life grappling with a rare form of autism that rendered her essentially nonverbal until her parents, filled with unwavering belief in their daughter’s potential, embarked on a transformative journey to discover the true depth of Makayla’s inner world. Through the lens of this inspiring film, we witness Makayla’s courageous steps as she unveils her thoughts, feelings, and insights. With her newfound ability to express herself, she shines as an inspiring advocate for autism, determined to show the world the power and beauty of neurodiversity. Worth a watch.

This initially premiered at the 2024 Slamdance Film Festival earlier this year. Netflix debuts Makayla’s Voice: A Letter to the World short streaming on Netflix starting December 11th, 2024 this fall.
