Selena Gomez Explains Why She Was ‘A Bit Awkward’ With Ariana Grande!

Is there bad blood between Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande? The answer is NO! So why have things sometimes been awkward between them?

While talking to Saoirse Ronan for Variety’s Actors on Actors series on Wednesday, Selena shared that she’s often “a bit awkward” around other celebrities, including Ari at one point! She explained:

“​​I think you can tell, now that we’ve hung out, that I’m still a bit awkward. So I never like to bother people. Ariana was in the other room, and I was like, ‘I’d love to go say hi, but I don’t want to bother her,’ because I know how life can be. I think that can step in the way of me getting to know people, and that’s something I should work on a little bit.”

They both received a Golden Globe nomination this week for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture category — Selena for her role of Jessi Del Monte in Emilia Pérez, and Ariana for portraying Glinda in Wicked. And the Wizards of Waverly Place alum and the Break Free singer made sure to reach out to one another!

Taylor Swift’s bestie posted a video of herself watching the nominations announcement, where she said in excitement:

“Oh my God! Ari!”

Aww!

Selena then got a sweet message from Ariana after the nominations! She told Variety that the Victorious alum was one of the first people to reach out to her, saying:

“Ariana texted me and it was the sweetest note and it was about six in the morning.”

And, of course, Selena also received a text from her boyfriend, Benny Blanco, at the time:

“We sent each other voice messages. It was very exciting.”

Cute! For her part, Ariana expressed to the outlet that she “always adored” and had “respect for” Selena, adding:

“I was really happy for her to see us on that list together. It was very special. I really love watching this moment happen for Selena. I know how hard she’s worked and how long she’s waited. I recognize that because it resonates with me so I know that feeling. So when you can reach out to your friends in the industry and say, ‘Great work, congratulations,’ why not do it?”

Hell yes! We love this energy from them!

Ultimately, it sounds like Selena has a new good pal in Ariana! In fact, the Positions singer wanted to get to know her more afterward, so she asked to sit next to her at the Academy Women’s Luncheon on Tuesday at the Academy Museum! OMG! Ariana shared:

“I don’t know Selena as well as I wish I did so I’m excited to sit next to her today.”
