“We are the reason why the world is on the brink of disaster…” The truth right there. Whoa! X Verleih has revealed the full German trailer for the film titled The Light, also known as Das Licht in German. It’s the latest feature film from acclaimed German filmmaker Tom Tykwer, his first feature since A Hologram for the King in 2016, because he’s also been working on the “Babylon Berlin” series for the last 8 years. The film has a March 2025 release date in Germany and will premiere at the upcoming 2025 Berlin Film Festival in February as the big Opening Night film. A family faces collapse as they deal with modern issues, searching for new beginnings in a troubled world. Their life is disrupted by the arrival of a mysterious Syrian woman, who “puts the Engels’ emotional world to an unexpectedly wild test.” Filming took place in Berlin and North Rhine-Westphalia and Kenya. Starring Lars Eidinger, Nicolette Krebitz, Elke Biesendorfer, Julius Gause, and Elyas Eldridge. This is a mesmerizing trailer, with some seriously wild footage in the second half – not only with the lights they’re using, but song & dance numbers, flying across the water, an animated sequence and more. Looks like Tykwer has something harsh to say about modern German society! Let’s go.
Here’s the full official trailer (+ poster) for Tom Tykwer’s film Das Licht, direct from X Verleih’s YouTube:
“After quite a long time spent in the roaring 20s with ‘Babylon Berlin’, I can finally turn my attention back to the present. In The Light, there is arguing, wrestling and fighting, but there is also laughter, singing and dancing. The film aims to challenge the spectrum of emotions and the corresponding narrative possibilities. And the characters are very familiar to me. So I want to try to reflect their inner turmoil and at the same time their closeness for the audience and make it tangible.” –Director Tom Tykwer

In The Light, Tom Tykwer paints the portrait of a family caught between collapse and new beginnings, dealing with the big issues of our time in a world that is reeling. Tim (Lars Eidinger), Milena (Nicolette Krebitz), their almost grown-up twins Frieda (Elke Biesendorfer) & Jon (Julius Gause), and their son Dio (Elyas Eldridge) – this is the Engels family, who seemingly have nothing left to hold them together when the housekeeper Farrah (Tala al Deen) enters their lives. The mysterious Syrian woman puts the Engels’ emotional world to an unexpectedly wild test. Das Licht, also known as The Light, is written and directed by acclaimed German filmmaker Tom Tykwer, director of the films Deadly Maria, Winter Sleepers, Run Lola Run, The Princess and the Warrior, Heaven, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, The International, Three, Cloud Atlas, A Hologram for the King previously, and working on the “Babylon Berlin” & “Sense8” series. Produced by Uwe Schott and Tom Tykwer and X Filme Creative Pool. X Verleih will debut Tykwer’s Das Licht in German cinemas starting March 20th, 2025 next year. No US release date is set – stay tuned.
