Chloe Slater, NME’s latest star of The Cover, has compiled an exclusive playlist to accompany the story’s launch – check it out below.
The Manchester-based indie artist is on this week’s (February 3) edition of The Cover, a weekly manifestation of NME’s commitment to supporting emerging talent across the globe on a weekly basis. To accompany The Cover, Slater has curated an exclusive playlist for NME featuring songs to soundtrack an ‘Indie Winter Walk In The City’. Since breaking through last year with ‘24 Hours’, a relatable commentary on influencer culture, Slater has quickly become known for her outspoken songs, which reflect the concerns of her generation. While the content of her music has marked her out as an exciting new voice in British indie, it’s also made her a lightning rod for hate and derision. “My music is definitely very politicised, and I know that, but it’s made for a certain type of person with a certain set of morals,” she shrugs with a smile. “Not everyone has [the same ones], and that’s OK. That’s just how the world is.”
Elsewhere in this week’s Cover, the 21-year-old artist discusses the insecurities social media imposes on women, her commitment to standing up for causes she believes in, and her journey with politics. “[Being political] was never really put on me as a kid,” she explains. “I like that, though – it means my views are all my own and haven’t been influenced by my family. I went out and found them by myself.”
