The Bear returned for a Season 4 on Hulu, and the show’s ending once again proved to be magnificent and tense. This time, though, there is sad news about one of the primary members of the group.
Fans are already asking the big questions about whether Carmy is leaving the show. And if not him, who is leaving the Bear?
Does Carmy or Sydney leave the Restaurant in The Bear Season 4’s ending?
After a turbulent phase, where Carmy seemed to be completely lost, he and Sydney finally had an honest conversation at the end of the fourth season. In the ninth episode, Sydney finally took a look at her new partnership agreement with the restaurant and realised that in the new contract, the ownership of the place was divided evenly between Cicero and The Bear. The Bear included Sydney and Sugar, but no Carmy.
Sydney confronted Carmy about the agreement, and Carmy revealed that he plans to leave the restaurant. He explains that he does not plan to leave right away, but rather to retire after they resolve the Bear’s finances. He will leave the restaurant stable before going away.
Why does Carmy decide to retire from The Bear restaurant?
The reason for Carmy’s leaving comes back to Mikey (Jon Bernthal), Carmy’s brother, who committed suicide. Carmy explained that he became a chef and opened the Bear so that he could avoid some parts of his life. This was primarily about Mikey’s death, which Carmy refused to deal with.
He also realized that he was one of the reasons for The Bear’s downfall, despite building it from scratch. His anxiety and inability to make decisions have impacted the restaurant significantly. So, Carmy insisted that Sydney should stay on in the restaurant and take things forward in a way he could not. “I believe in you more than I’ve ever believed in myself. Because you’re the bear,” Carmy tells Sydney in the episode.
So, The Bear season 4 clarifies that Carmy will indeed leave, but it is not happening just yet. Moreover, The Bear’s troubles are barely over yet. A fifth season may delve further into the bleak financial condition and its resolution.
