Gayle King’s Future At CBS Mornings In Jeopardy
January 2026 marks 14 years since Gayle King joined the morning news at CBS. She’s seen the show through multiple host changes and a renaming. The show changed from CBS This Morning to CBS Mornings in 2021.
News broke earlier this month that Gayle King is leaving the morning show when her contract runs out in May 2026. The news followed shocking layoffs and departures at the network, including a long-running nightly news anchor.
Not only is Gayle reportedly on the way out, the network has their eye on Hoda Kotb to replace her. Both CBS and Gayle King denied that she was leaving, but the network did admit they haven’t talked about extending her contract when it expires next year.

Gayle King’s professional career is in question. But her personal life is flourishing. She took to social media on Thursday, November 6, to share ‘breaking news’ with her fans. She revealed that her son and his wife are expecting their first child.
The CBS Mornings host shares two children with her ex-husband, William Bumpus. Despite online rumors, Gayle King is currently single. Gayle King’s daughter, Kirby Bumpus, already made her a grandmother two times over. Kirby and her husband welcomed their first child in September 2021 and their second child on Mother’s Day 2024.
Now it is her brother’s turn. Gayle King’s son, Will Bumpus, married Elise Smith in 2024 at Oprah Winfrey’s stunning home in Montecito, California. Oprah was in attendance at the baby shower for Gayle King’s son and daughter-in-law.

Favorite son @willgb3 and favorite daughter-in-law, the lovely @elisemariesmith have JUST given me permission to share photos from Sunday’s baby shower and their baby shoot. They can’t wait and neither can anybody who loves them,” Gayle King wrote on Instagram.
