Today Show host Savannah Guthrie was all set to co-host the 2026 Winter Olympics’ opening ceremony, which will premiere on February 6th, 2026. The Olympics are to be held in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. Yet, things all changed when her mother, Nancy Guthrie, went missing on February 1st, 2026. She has since dropped out of her hosting obligations, but who is taking her place? Keep reading for more details.
Savannah Guthrie Exits Her Role At 2026 Olympics
When Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy Guthrie, went missing from her home in Tucson, Arizona, the family went into crisis mode. Savannah was not present for the Today Show, despite having just returned from vocal cord surgery. Unfortunately, this was an emergency, and her co-hosts as well as fans were praying for her along the way. It has been terrifying, getting worse by the minute, and every moment counts, especially since Nancy is 84. Aside from her daily hosting gig, Savannah was also set to co-host the 2026 opening ceremony for the Olympics.
She would be sitting alongside Shaun White and Terry Gannon, but alas, she had to bow out. This was expected the moment her mother went missing, but who will be filling her spot? Per the executive producer and president of NBC Olympics Production, Molly Solomon, they have selected Mary Carillo to take over. A statement was released on Wednesday, February 4th, and it said this about the new selection:
“Our hearts go out to Savannah and the entire Guthrie family. They continue to have our full support. We are fortunate to have a deep bench of talented commentators who will step in and fill these roles. Mary is one of the most experienced Olympic commentators ever and a master storyteller. She and Terry will lead the American audience through one of the world’s greatest global moments.”
Savannah Guthrie will also have the support of her Today co-host Craig Melvin. He was also headed over to Italy, but it has since been announced that he will remain in the States. It is unclear why, but it likely has to do with Savannah and her family going through this horrific time.
Does It Matter?
When it was announced that Mary Carillo would take Savannah Guthrie’s spot at the Olympics, many followers did not care. They felt that with what was going on regarding Nancy Guthrie, this was unimportant. Moreover, they were more concerned with the bizarre situation happening in Arizona than with what was going on in Italy:
- Why would anyone care about who has replaced Savannah as a host for the Olympics with what’s going on? WHO CARES.
- Seriously……who cares about the Olympics when your beloved Mom has been abducted & missing??!!!! Sending prayers and hope to Savannah & her family
Hopefully, Savannah Guthrie and her family can get some resolution to this horrible situation sooner rather than later. It has been far too long, and it is heartbreaking all around.
