Whistle is a movie that kinda fell through the cracks earlier this year. It got some publicity from some fairly unexpected sources (including a relatively positive review from the guys at RedLetterMedia), but it obviously never caught on in the same way something like Obsession or Backrooms did.
Which is a mild shame, considering Whistle is something we don’t see a whole lot of anymore — namely, the fact that it’s an obvious ‘80s horror throwback that genuinely feels like an authentic dead teenager flick from the eighties.
Corin Hardy’s film may take place in contemporary society (although the grimy, Rustbelt-looking locale is never officially identified at any point in the movie) but it unmistakably takes its cues from stuff like A Nightmare on Elm Street 4 and Night of the Demons. It mimics the spirit and mentality of the late ‘80s classics (and not so classics) so well that you kinda wonder if Hardy didn’t intentionally map the film to the timbre and tone of something like The Gate or The Slumber Party Massacre 2. It’s a period piece spiritually, even if it isn’t a period piece technically.
The gimmick of Whistle is straight forward. Somehow, someway, a buncha kids at the same high school keep coming into possession of a genuine Aztec death whistle. The problem, of course, is that anybody who blows into it summons their death, even if it’s coming about 70 years earlier than predestined. That’s definitely the coolest element of the film; instead of taking an obvious Freddy Krueger or Final Destination type like turn, the victims in Whistle just rapidly age in a matter of minutes, or mysteriously combust or, in the absolute best scene in the entire film, completely dismantle themselves right in front of their parents like they’re being torn asunder in an invisible car crash. Vecna ain’t got nothing on the limb distortion and facial rearrangements going on in this movie.
The cast is pretty good. Dafne Keen (from the Wolverine movies) plays our main character, a quasi-goth student with, get this, a traumatic past. Boy, you don’t see that in too many horror movies nowadays, do you? Her love interest is played by Sophie Nelisse (from Yellow Jackets and Heated Rivalry) while Sky Yang plays the stoner-coded cousin who likes to dress up like The Crow and try to hit on cheerleaders with chronic health issues. Nick Frost from Shaun of the Dead even shows up in an extended cameo, playing a professor named Craven. Which is an obvious reference to … who else? … John Carpenter.
The movie reminds me a lot of It Follows. The lighting is similar, the cinematography is similar, even some of the set pieces are similar. But the story does take a lot of twists and turns so it never feels like a shameless wannabe. You can see the palpable influence on Whistle, but the resemblances are largely just visual and not thematically.
The soundtrack is a nice jumble of old school ‘80s tracks and more recent tracks that try to sound like old school ‘80s tracks. The movie even opens with Divinyls’ “Back To The Wall,” a.k.a., that one song from Elm Street 4. It’s a movie that doesn’t shy away from its inspiration, even when the needle drops are a little corny (i.e., that Gunship cover of “Time After Time” playing during a “romantic” moment at the carnival.) The score is generally pretty good, but I’m afraid this is another movie that relies far too heavily on ear-shrieking jump scares, which is especially egregious considering how quiet the mixing on the film is.
Aesthetically and aurally, Whistle captures the spirit of late ‘80s suburban horror films quite well. The Lost Boys, Heathers, Fright Night, you can easily see their DNA pulsing through this film. I guess the question arises if Whistle is TOO reverential of its precursors, to the point it becomes a feature length homage with no real core identity or personality of its own. Different viewers are going to have different perspectives on that one, but I could see the argument going both ways with equally valid evidence for and against the claim.
It’s an overlong movie for sure. It could’ve benefit from being 20 minutes shorter and they definitely could’ve sped up the “discovery” process quite a bit. It takes a ridiculously long time for the kid to put two and two together about the death whistle and some scenes drag on for far too long. And periodically the CGI effects are pretty bad; the charred zombie in the opening scene, for example, looks like something you’d expect to see in an early 2000s straight to DVD release.
If Smile came out in 1988, it would probably look and feel a lot like Whistle. It’s somber and depressed and occasionally cynical, but it has that lighthearted air that’s sorely missing from most modern horror offerings. It’s bright and pastel and floaty even when the characters are literally venturing through dilapidated neighborhoods and doing battle with opioid-slinging youth pastors (which has to be one of the weirdest subplots to emerge in ANY horror film released this year.) And even with inescapable gloom and doom on the horizon, there’s this sense of fun undergirding everything that prevents the film from becoming a nihilistic exercise. Even at its goriest and grossest, there’s some winking and nodding at the audience. And compared to something like Evil Dead Burn or The Monkey, Whistle isn’t even THAT bloody or pessimistic in the first place.
Some people might like Whistle, some people might find it disappointing. But it’s probably the closest we’re going to get to somebody making a modern-day Waxwork or Prom Night 3: The Last Kiss. And yeah, you already know if that’s a positive or a negative already.
