Hey! Maybe Ken Jennings‘ next adventure is playing professional baseball. The Jeopardy! host answered a fan question from an alumnus, in which he compared his 74-game streak to a Seattle Mariners season.
Celebrity Jeopardy! Season 4 winner Mina Kimes sat in the audience during a recent Jeopardy! taping. During a fan Q&A, she asked him a question about Jeopardy! Masters and baseball.
“@Mina_Kimes is asking Ken Jennings those hard-hitting questions #JeopardyMasters #baseball #seattle #mariners,” the Instagram post was captioned on August 26.
“My question for you is, what is harder — Jeopardy! Masters or being a lifelong Mariners fan?” she asked. This caused Jennings to laugh before answering the question.
“Being a Mariners fan creates character,” he said. “You know, you don’t grow up expecting good things to happen to you, your city, your favorite players.” To this, Kimes nodded.
“You really understand that life is just a series of disappointments,” Jennings continued. “And when something non-disappointing happens, you really enjoy it.”
“Like Seattle is a cloudy city. When there’s a rare sunny day, people just go outside immediately because they know it’s not going to last,” he said. “And this is often true of our sports teams as well.”
“I was unprepared for Jeopardy!‘s success. The Mariners had taught me that really, you should expect to win… I guess, 74 wins is a pretty average Mariners season, honestly.”
“So, my Jeopardy! streak is the same as a better-than-average Mariners season,” he said. This caused the audience to laugh.
Although Jennings films Jeopardy! in California, he resides in Washington state with his family, according to his bio. The game show host has shared photos of himself and his son at numerous Mariners games in the past.
Fans reacted to Jennings’ take in the comments. “Being a Mariners fan isn’t for the weak. Go M’s!” one wrote.
“I have 3 teenage kids. All my grey hairs are from being a Mariners fan,” another joked.
“As a lifelong Mets fan, 100% Ken, we’ll get there someday,” a third added.
“It’s trueeeee,” a fan commented.
Jennings never competed in Jeopardy! Masters as a contestant, since the tournament was started after he was a contestant, but he has hosted all four seasons of it. He has, however, competed in the Jeopardy! Ultimate Tournament of Champions, the IBM Challenge, Jeopardy! Battle of the Decades, Jeopardy! All-Star Game, and Jeopardy! Greatest of All Time.
Season 4 is currently airing and features six Jeopardy! greats competing for $500,000. The contestants include Yogesh Raut, Victoria Groce, Juveria Zaheer, Andrew He, Paolo Pasco, and Long Nguyen.
