Big video game hero, Duke Nukem is being made into a film. The amalgam of Ash from Evil Dead, Arnold Schwarzenegger and other 80s action heroes, Duke Nukem made for a heck of a hilarious video game character. The cheesy hero is now at the center of a film being worked on by the creators of Netflix’s Cobra Kai series.
Cobra Kai creators, Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald definitely have the 80s sensibilities thing down. So, they are a perfect pairing for Duke’s characteristics.
The game franchise launched in 1991 and has seen multiple sequels and spinoffs since then.
The synopsis for Duke Nukem went like this:
Blonde action hero Duke Nukem takes on murderous aliens and mutated Los Angeles police officers that have taken over Los Angeles. In the early 21st century, The city of Los Angeles has been taken over by murderous aliens and the LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department) has mutated.
Much like Ash Williams in Evil Dead, Duke was the every man. He was cheesy and not suited to be a hero, however he ended up having to thwart an alien invasion.
It will be interesting to see what the Cobra Kai creators come up with for Duke. He is a bit outdated and had some serious sexist vibes going on back in the day. Those will probably be worked on a bit since today’s climate is a world away from the 80s and 90s.
