It’s the start of a brand new year, and Paramount+ wants to ensure you aren’t planning to end your subscription to save a few bucks after the holiday blitz. Having easy access to the Scream and Halloween franchises under the same digital roof may already be reason enough to stay with the streamer.
Paramount Global is also rebranding as Paramount+ With Showtime, which will now allow current Paramount+ subscribers to access some original series content, including Yellowjackets. It’s also good to remember that any title with an asterisk (*) listed below is available to all Paramount+ with Showtime subscribers.
For 2024, there are definitely a few standouts worth noting this month.
Event Horizon
Event Horizon has long been lovingly referred to as Hellraiser in space. Originally released in 1997 to little fanfare, watching Sam Neill catch a demonic case of space madness is now required viewing for horror fans. It’s one of the most unapologetically gory horror movies of the nineties and is assuredly a new classic of the genre. The Lovecraftian inspired setup takes the age-old sci-fi premise from In the Mountains of Madness, and twists it into a starlit journey into Hell itself. From the director of the Resident Evil franchise, Event Horizon may well wind up being Paul W.S. Anderson’s most celebrated film.

Only Lovers Left Alive*
Jim Jarmusch’s Only Lovers Left Alive is the perfect date movie for any Vitamin D-deprived couple who truly believes that Hell is other people. Adam (Tom Hiddleston) spends his nights making contemplative Noise Rock on the outskirts of Detroit; Eve (Tilda Swinton) obsessively reads every book known to man and sips wine glasses of blood with Christopher Marlow, a.k.a. Shakespeare (John Hurt). When they come together, it’s easy to see why they’re perfect for each other and why their relationship has lasted hundreds of years. Only Lovers Left Alive is one of our favorite films to watch together as a couple, and it’s the ultimate indie vampire hangout movie.
The Stanford Prison Experiment*
The real Stanford prison experiment took place in 1971 and attempted to recreate what happens within the power dynamics between guards and the criminals they control. The experiment had to be cut short due to the fact that both groups fell into their roles as abusers and victims so quickly that it alarmed everyone involved. It took a long time for a film to be made about the entire ordeal, and The Stanford Prison Experiment shows how quickly things devolved completely. The experiment itself remains one of the most famous exercises in psychological history. It’s not horrifically violent, but it most definitely could be seen as a horror movie.
What Lies Beneath
Look, this is the closest we’ll probably ever get to seeing Harrison Ford in a horror movie. Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer star as an ideal couple dealing with empty nest syndrome after their daughter heads off to college. A long-dormant mystery emerges as strange noises and ghostly images appear throughout the house. The words “You Know” are etched onto the bathroom mirror, leading Pfeiffer’s character to start investigating the disappearance of a beautiful woman who vanished years before. Ford becomes more and more frightening as What Lies Beneath plays out until the ghost becomes more of an ally than a menace. Expertly paced and crafted by director Robert Zemeckis, the entire film is a masterclass in suspense and big-budget scares.
January looks to be a great kickoff for the new launch of Paramount+ With Showtime, with plenty of choice offerings to pick through.
