It always shocks me when I hear from a fellow horror lover who didn’t know about 1986’s Trick Or Treat. This one is not to be confused with Michael Dougherty’s 2009 Trick r’ Treat. The film very much modeled itself after Nightmare on Elm Street and the big, comic personality of Freddy Krueger. The central nightmare heavy metal music god, Sammi Curr is a spot-on one-liner delivering villain. All that and this film centers on a nerd who gets even thanks to the supernatural similar to Christine. Now, we are getting a 4K UHD release of the cult classic from Synapse Films and we can’t wait.
The synopsis for Trick or Treat goes like this:
Horror comedy featuring rock gods Gene Simmons and Ozzy Osbourne. A bullied ‘metal head’ obtains a mysterious demo record of a recently deceased hard rock star with startling consequences.
I’m a huge fan of this one. It has been hard to get a hold of on VHS, DVD and Blu-Ray. So, it will be awesome to see it widely available here in the States for the first time in a long time. I’m also hoping this leads to Trick or Treat landing on some streaming channels as well. It needs a hell of a lot more attention than it has had.
The film, directed by Charles Martin Smith had a slew of cameos by 80s heavy metal personalities including Gene Simmons and Ozzy Osborne. Plus, the central narrative that follows a bullied teen, who uses Sammi Curr’s satanic powers to get even is a lovely bit of 1980s horror goodness.
We will have more details on the disc soon. Once we do, we will be sure to share special features, box-art and more.
