[Interview] Cinematographer Fletcher Wolfe Talks Movie Magic With iHorror

Often with our beloved films, we speak about our favorite actor, actress, writer, or director, leaving out the role of a cinematographer, also known as a director of photography (DP). Fletcher Wolfe was a cinematographer on the new film set to release on June 2, 2023, Esme My Love.

Fletcher’s role was crucial in creating this film, as she was responsible for the artistic and technical decisions related to the visual aspects of the finished product.

Cinematography is essential in motion pictures because it enhances visual storytelling, sets the tone and atmosphere, creates visual aesthetics, communicates information and emotions, enhances the narrative, and immerses the audience in the film’s world.

It’s an art form that combines technical expertise with creative choices to bring stories to life visually. The outstanding cinematography in Esme My Love beautifully captured the landscapes and woods in this film. 

“As a director and a producer, my greatest accomplishment was bringing on the collaborators that I did for this film, and it looks the way it looks because of my collaboration with Fletcher Wolfe, my cinemaphotographer…I do think she is one the greatest living cinematographers right now, and I knew that she was the one to work with, and I think that this film shows why she was the one to work with.” – Cory Choy, Director. 

This interview would mark the first time for me that I can remember interviewing a solo cinematographer on any project, which was quite rewarding. Fletcher speaks about her background in cinema and others that have inspired her to continue pursuing her work over the years. One film her sister introduced her to in High School was Tod Haynes’s film Velvet Goldmine (1998), which was very influential.

Fletcher has worked as an electrician and gaffer on commercials, music videos, and documentaries, utilizing the shorter projects to help with networking and serve as a stepping stone to more extensive and longer projects.
