Well, before the world really stopped to think about if they really loved or flat-out hated David Gordon Green’s Halloween trilogy, he had already been greenlit to bring us a trilogy of Exorcist films. So, here we go! The first up in Green’s upcoming possession trilogy is titled, The Exorcist: Believer.
Believer kicks off the possession trilogy at Blumhouse. It also brings back Chris McNeil played by the wonderful Ellen Burstyn. Burtyn’s character is here to loan a hand to Leslie Odom Jr’s kiddo who recently became possessed by Pazuzu. That happens to be the same demon that possessed Regan in the first Exorcist film. It is likely that Green will rely heavily on the original film and give us a lot of nostalgia. For everything from the first film.
David Gordon Green‘s The Exorcist relaunch is set to be a legacy follow-up to the original classic, and the official title was announced at CinemaCon tonight – The Exorcist: Believer.
Gordon Green is directing the brand new sequel to The Exorcist for Universal, Blumhouse and Morgan Creek that will pave the way for a new trilogy. The first film in the trilogy will be released theatrically on October 13, 2023, with Leslie Odom Jr. starring alongside Ellen Burstyn, who will be reprising her role as Chris MacNeil from the original 1973 movie.
The first plot details we were provided with last year tease, “Odom Jr. will play the father of a possessed child. Desperate for help, he tracks down Ms. Burstyn’s character.”
The synopsis for The Exorcist went like this:
One of the most profitable horror movies ever made, this tale of an exorcism is based loosely on actual events. When young Regan (Linda Blair) starts acting odd — levitating, speaking in tongues — her worried mother (Ellen Burstyn) seeks medical help, only to hit a dead end. A local priest (Jason Miller), however, thinks the girl may be seized by the devil. The priest makes a request to perform an exorcism, and the church sends in an expert (Max von Sydow) to help with the difficult job.
The Exorcist: Believer also stars Ann Dowd, Lidya Jewett, Raphael Sbarge, Jennifer Nettles, and Olivia Marcum.
The Exorcist: Believer arrives in theaters beginning October 13, 2023.
