If you’re a glutton for punishment, I have good news for you. An unspeakably bleak Stephen King adaptation is now available to stream via Amazon Freevee. I’m talking about Frank Darabont’s gut punch of a horror picture The Mist.
This Stephen King adaptation is highly effective and needs to be seen. But if you’ve never watched The Mist and plan to embark on an inaugural viewing, be forewarned that this flick is a lot to take. The film’s final moments are especially rough.
The Mist features a strong ensemble cast with a couple of familiar faces. Both Thomas Jane (The Punisher) and Marcia Gay Harden (Mystic River) turn in arresting performances you won’t soon forget. Laurie Holden, Andre Braugher, Toby Jones, and William Sadler round out the cast of characters.
The Mist is plenty entertaining, taken purely at face value. But there is more to the picture than what’s on the surface. If you’re keen to look a little deeper, the film delivers astute commentary on both religious fanaticism and the dangers of hive mentality.
The setup goes like this: After a powerful storm damages their Maine home, David Drayton (Jane) and his young son head into town to gather food and supplies. Soon afterward, a thick fog rolls in and engulfs the town, trapping the Draytons and others in the grocery store. Terror mounts as deadly creatures reveal themselves outside, but that may be nothing compared to the threat within, where a zealot (Harden) calls for a sacrifice.
That’s all we have for you, dear reader. But stay tuned to the site for more updates on what’s streaming and where to find it. Also, make sure to follow @DreadCentral on Twitter so you never miss an update.
