Vin Diesel’s fan-favorite character, Riddick has been around since Pitch Black took audiences by surprise. The film kicked off the Riddick franchise which spawned two additional films based in the same universe. Now, Vin Diesel returns as Riddick with director and co-scribe, David Twohy returning to the universe they created decades ago in order to show us what Riddick’s home planet looks like.
‘Riddick: Furya’s‘ synopsis breaks down like this according to Deadline:
“Riddick finally returns to his home world, a place he barely remembers and one he fears might be left in ruins by the Necromongers. But there he finds other Furyans fighting for their existence against a new enemy. And some of these Furyans are more like Riddick than he could have ever imagined.”
“Our legion fans have demanded it for years, and now we’re finally ready to honor their call to action with Riddick: Furya,” director, Twhoy said. “My collaboration with Vin and One Race has spanned 20 fruitful years, as together we’ve created three movies, two video games, an anime production, and motion comics for the internet. This new big-screen event will see a return to Riddick’s homeworld, where we finally get to explore Riddick’s genesis.”
Pitch Black kicked the entire thing off with a synopsis that was very inspired by Ridley Scott’s Alien. The synopsis for the initial chapter went like this:
A deep space transporter crash-lands on a desolate planet circled by three suns. Among the survivors are pilot Carolyn Fry, mystic Abu `Imam’ al-Walid, cop William J Johns and convicted criminal Richard B Riddick, and their first thoughts are of survival and escape. Then Fry finds out that the planet suffers a total eclipse every 22 years, which is when the hibernating, flesh-eating inhabitants awake and hunt.
The massively popular series also spawned an anime feature, a video game and comic books.
