Golden Globe nominee Kit Harington has opened up about Game of Thrones fans’ petition to remake the hit HBO show’s eighth and final season, which was met with negative reviews from critics and audiences alike. The fantasy drama ended its run in 2019 with Season 8 becoming its lowest-rated installment ever. It’s also the only season that didn’t receive a Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes.
What did Kit Harington say about Game of Thrones’ ending and backlash?
During a recent interview with The New York Times, Harington expressed his disappointment over Game of Thrones fans starting a petition to convince HBO to redo the final season with “competent writers.” The petition was signed by nearly two million people, who weren’t happy with how the show ended. According to Harington, he was actually shocked by the negative response, especially when he knew that he had worked hard during the Season 8 production.
“That genuinely angered me,” Harington shared. “Like, how dare you? Sorry, that’s just how I feel. I think it was a level of idiocy that can only come about through social media.”
Game of Thrones was created by showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, based on George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novel series. The ensemble cast also included Emilia Clarke, Lena Headey, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Peter Dinklage, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams, Gwendoline Christie, Aidan Gillen, Iain Glenn, Isaac Hempstead, and more. After the show concluded, HBO expanded the show’s lore with its first prequel spin-off, House of the Dragon, which will be returning for two more seasons. Following its success, the network ordered its second Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which will premiere on January 18, 2026.
