Viewers are eager to learn whether Dope Thief Season 2 has been canceled or renewed by Apple TV+. Created by Peter Craig, the crime drama series focuses on two best friends who pretend to be DEA agents to rob drug dealers. Things go awry when they mistakenly steal from a drug ring, which real DEA agents are watching. With Season 1 about to reach its end, many are curious to know if the series will be renewed for another outing.
Here are all the details.
Is Dope Thief Season 2 canceled by Apple TV+?
Dope Thief Season 2 is neither canceled nor renewed by Apple TV+ at the moment.
Typically, renewing a particular series involves various factors, including its streaming performance, rights, financial viability, audience reception, narrative potential, and more. If the series manages to meet most of these expectations, then a renewal becomes likely. In the case of Dope Thief, it has received favorable reviews, but its viewership doesn’t match that of other Apple TV+ hits like Severance. This might pose a challenge in its renewal.
Additionally, in an interview with Radio Times, showrunner Craig revealed that Dennis Tafoya’s 2009 novel wasn’t entirely adapted. While its first part paid homage to its source material, the second half took its creative liberties.
He further adds, “The second story isn’t there in this one. It’s just the first story all the way through with a bunch of changes in the back half. Dennis tells me he’s happy with that, so I think we’re OK. I’ve adapted a lot of authors, and I’m usually pretty careful about making sure they’re on board with everything, and he seemed to be on board with everything.”
He acknowledges that the author was happy with the changes made to the series. However, leaving the story incomplete alters the book’s original intent. This might prove to be a roadblock for Season 2 to come to fruition.
