Severance Season 2 Episode 2 sees John Turturro’s character, Irving, arriving at a phone booth as an Outie and making a call to someone. During the call, he says something ominous and mysterious to the person on the other end. This scene has left fans curious about what Irving revealed.
So, what was Irving up to at the phone booth in Severance Season 2 Episode 2? Here is the mystery explored.
What was Irving doing at the phone booth in Severance Season 2 Episode 2?
In the middle of Season 2 Episode 2, Irving’s Outie goes to a phone booth to make a call to someone. After calling that person, Irving told the following, which makes it seem as if he has been in cahoots with or working on a plan involving his Innie persona, to expose Lumon. “Okay. You’re not picking up, I get it. I want you to know my innie got the message,” he said.
It is unknown whom Irving had contacted. However, one possible candidate would be Reghabi. Reghabi is an ex-Lumon employee and surgeon who was the one who performed the Severance procedure at their directive. However, she has since left and started opposing the company.
Moreover, it’s also unclear what message Irving was referring to. However, they could be related to what he saw at the end of Season 1. At the end of the inaugural season, Irving, after the MDR team activated the Overtime Protocol to connect to the outside world, had awoken in an apartment adorned with paintings of a dark hallway. It’s possible that Irving was using the paintings he saw as a communication medium to Reghabi or whoever was in on his plan to take down Lumon.
Meanwhile, Irving was being shadowed by Burt (Christopher Walken). Burt is a Lumon Optics and Design employee, whom Irving’s Innie had been romantically involved with prior to Burt’s retirement. Burt had likely been shadowing Irving ever since the latter’s Innie went to his address in the Season 1 finale to try and reconnect with him.
Ultimately, it’s currently unclear what Irving’s plan involving his Innie is. The plan would only become more clear in future episodes.
