Atari and Nightdive Studios brought back a PS2 horror game last year in the form of The Thing: Remastered. Based on the beloved 1982 John Carpenter film, it was a surprise the Washington-based developer was bringing back the 2002 cult classic. Now more surprising is that The Thing has become Nightdive Studios’ fastest-selling launch to date.
The Thing: Remastered is the studio’s fastest-selling title
Shared in Atari’s 2024 end-of-year business report, the company praised Nightdive Studios on their successful launch of The Thing: Remastered. Apart from being the studio’s fastest-selling game, it was also well-received by critics, as mentioned in the report.
“The Thing: Remastered was well-received by critics and players alike and became Nightdive Studios’ fastest-selling title at launch across all digital PC and console storefronts,” the Atari’s end-of-year business update.
“It was critical that Atari execute against our retro-focused strategy in 2024, and I am extremely pleased with the company’s performance across all of our business lines,” said Wade Rosen, Chairman and CEO of Atari. “Ending the year with such a strong reception to our fourth-quarter game releases — Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind and The Thing: Remastered, as well as the Nintendo Switch release of RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic — gives me confidence that our strategy will lead to even more success in the coming year.”
The Thing: Remastered stealth launched just last month during the PC Gaming Show: Most Wanted livestream. It is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. It can also be streamed via NVIDIA GeForce Now for members.
The new version of the 2002 third-person survival horror shooter is a faithful recreation of the original but includes several enhancements to modernize the 20-year-old game. This includes 4K resolution and frame rates up to 120 FPS for players that have compatible hardware.
