Liam Payne died Wednesday after falling off of a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina, according to TMZ and CNN.
The former One Direction member was 31 years old.
According to authorities, Payne fell from the third floor of the CasaSur Palermo Hotel around 5:00 p.m. local time. The cause of his death is currently under investigation, and it remains unclear whether it was accidental or intentional.
Payne was 16 years old when he joined One Direction alongside Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik. Born out of the British television singing series The X-Factor, the group went on to become one of the biggest boy bands in music history, selling 70 million records worldwide, earning 29 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, and grossing the highest revenue for a concert tour by a vocal group. Their accolades also included seven BRIT Awards, six Billboard Music Awards, and the title of Artist of the Year title at the 2013 AMAs.
After One Direction went on a permanent hiatus in 2016, Payne signed with Republic Records and released his debut solo album, LP1, in 2019. He had been working on a second studio album and released titled “Teardrops” in March 2024.
Payne is survived by his son, Bear Grey Payne, who was born in 2017.
