We’re still struggling to wrap our mind around Liam Payne‘s tragic death at just 31 years old. And as we hear more about the days leading up to it, we keep learning about shocking allegations being made by his ex.
Maya Henry has been slowly opening up about her relationship with the One Direction singer, painting a pretty horrible picture if we’re being honest. Earlier this year she announced she was releasing a book called Looking Forward. This was a novel, not a tell-all — but it quickly became apparent this was based on her actual experiences.
There’s a scene in the book when a young couple called Oliver and Mallory get pregnant. Mallory is excited, but Olive isn’t ready to be a father — so he talks Mallory into getting an abortion. She suffers life-endangering complications and — because he isn’t there to take her — drags herself to the hospital for treatment.
Maya didn’t come out and say Liam made her get an abortion, but she gave everyone all the clues. Back in May, she told People:
“What I went through in real life is very similar to what Mallory went through in the book. I definitely did have some complications, and I did have to go to the hospital alone… It was very lonely, having these men tell you, ‘Oh, it’s going to feel like a heavy period, it’s not going to be that painful, it’s going to be easy.’ But I’m like, you’ve never even gone through anything like [this], so how would you know to tell me? That’s why I wanted to include it in the book, because I’ve seen so many people online talk about taking the abortion pill and it was the most painful thing for them. It’s just mind-boggling to me that you could tell a woman how they’re going to feel.”
She also said she had a similar ultimatum:
“If it were up to me, I wouldn’t have done it. But then also, if I were to have made a different decision, then I would’ve lost the person that I loved. There were definitely difficult conversations about it. But looking back now, things happen for a reason.”
Again, she was careful not to say explicitly that Liam was the ex who got her pregnant — or was physically abusive, like Oliver is in the book. But she’s being more open now.

On Monday, Maya went on a podcast called The Internet Is Dead and spoke directly about her experiences being in a relationship with Liam Payne. She said he was abusive and described threats of suicide he made long after they broke up. And she finally confirmed he did what Oliver did in the book — pushing her to get an abortion. Not only that, she claims he specifically wouldn’t let her get the procedure in the hospital because he was worried people would find out. She said:
“I kind of talked about this in the book, where I wanted to do it surgically in the hospital because I wanted to have like nurses and people around me because it is scary. He was like, ‘No, do it at home. I don’t want people to find out and like, the press find out if I’m there in the hospital with you, and I can’t go with you. So do it at home.’”
This was, she understood, because he wanted to be there with her through this ordeal. But when it actually was happening?
“So I do it at home, and then he leaves.”
Wow. That’s awful. And then of course she had complications and had to go to the hospital anyway… all alone.

This all came out just two days ago, two days before Liam’s tragic death. Wow.
Maya opens up more about her side of the relationship in the full interview (below):
We know the exes were in a bitter fight, with Maya reportedly looking into taking legal action against Liam, though we still don’t know what that was about. But she did say he was still reaching out to her with threats of self harm, which she found traumatizing and manipulative.
It is still unclear if Liam’s death, a fall from the balcony of his hotel room in Buenos Aires, was intentional. We just don’t know enough at this time. What we have heard is witnesses say he was being “aggressive” in the hotel lobby moments beforehand, allegedly smashing his computer before being helped upstairs to his room. Awful.
What do YOU think about all this coming out right before Liam’s death?
