With the calamity of Shannon inciting the very mélange of some blasphemous truths about Donald Trump sitting proudly atop the red carpet, the political “fires” now blaze. Shannon spit fire in a no-holds-barred tirade against the former President with tenacity and fury.

“He is an idiot. Total idiot. He is not my president. I will never say he is the President of the United States,” said Shannon with obvious contempt in his voice. The video then flatly cuts off—the message comes loud and clear: there is no holding back from Mr. Shannon.
The viewership was divided about the response; some congratulated Shannon for his candor, while others saw this as just another Hollywood elitist throwing insult after insult without any backing and replied with derision: “Actor goes from being a shitty actor to one with TDS. Smart career move.” Those who use this acronym—Trump Derangement Syndrome—often claim that those who oppose the former President can no longer think rationally.
This, in turn, diminished Shannon’s relevance. “Who is he? No one cares what he or the Hollywood pedos think,” one user retaliated, combining utter ignorance with aggression in pure internet spirit. Another user, taking a swipe, said, “Never heard of this guy.” If anything, that might sting worse than the political backlash for this actor.

But the defenses went up. “He’s a fantastic actor. It’s your loss really—he’s very talented,” one commenter opposed the attempts to dismiss Shannon’s career, referring to his electrifying performances in Take Shelter and Nocturnal Animals. However, this praise was mostly drowned out by the “who?” comments and Hollywood irrelevance accusations.
“Welcome to the canceled clueless,” was a bit more cruel, as if this one stunt fast-tracked Shannon to obscurity with no return.
“But that’s why Superman snapped his neck,” one said, darkly, invoking Shannon’s performance as General Zod in Man of Steel.
Now, here’s something to know for record—Michael Shannon isn’t exactly new to a controversy-or two. A guy who went into the business doing a lot of hard-hitting depictions of unhinged, volatile characters. So if this is a little bit of method acting bleeding into real life, then I guess it is. Or maybe he just really, really doesn’t like Trump. Whatever, the usual internet meltdown followed, confirming that putting politics and celebrities together is like throwing a lit match into a fireworks factory.
If this hurts Shannon’s career, then I’ll eat my words. But that will never really happen because Hollywood seems to have quite a bit of tolerance for anti-Trump rhetoric, and I’d bet my bottom dollar that most of the “outraged” people weren’t sitting in a theater watching one of his indie dramas anyway. Instead, this statement adds another facet to the endless culture war–every celebrity utterance becomes its own battleground.
