We’re learning more about Queen Elizabeth’s final days.
It turns out the late monarch continued to carry out her royal duties right up until the end, appointing Liz Truss as the new prime minister two days before her death on September 8, 2022. Not only that, she also took a moment to note the day’s events in her diary — though she kept it very brief when putting pen to paper!
In the new book Charles III: New King. New Court. The Inside Story, which came out on Thursday, author Robert Hardman revealed that while at Balmoral Castle on September 6, Queen Elizabeth sat down to document what happened during the day — something she did daily, even when she was not feeling well. The Tatler reported:
“It is unsurprising that the monarch was diligent in her documentation, even as illness made her increasingly frail.”

Sadly, this was her final diary entry before she passed away. Oof. When it comes to the content of the entry, you would think Her Majesty would have written about Truss. Instead, she jotted down five words about her private secretary, Sir Edward Young, who helped her organize the arrangements for swearing in the new head of the British government in Scotland. It read simply:
“Edward came to see me.”
That’s it! As Hardman pointed out in the book, per an except in The Telegraph:
“It transpires that she was still writing it at Balmoral two days before her death. Her last entry was as factual and practical as ever.”
That it was! Just maybe not so helpful to curious historians…
