When it comes to American Idol, there can only be one winner. However, even during the times when the decisions are in the hands of fans, eliminations can still come off as a surprise. Recently, fans have taken to social media to warns contestants of certain trends that could end up costing them the win.
There Are Different Ways Contestants Can Make An Impression On American Idol
American Idol contestants are meant to compete with only their own talent at their own disposal. However, there are all sorts of ways they can make an impression on both the judges and viewers at home.
Showmanship and relatability can also go a long way. That said, knowing a few special singing techniques can also help singers steal the show. On the other hand, certain skills can end up backfiring on an Idol hopeful.

On social media, a fan recently shared, “Hey singers. Learn from the Filo elimination. Multiple runs in a short period of time is boring.”
As noted by NBC, runs “are consecutive notes (typically three or more) sung in rapid succession as part of a scale, moving either up or down or back and forth from a base note or a musical syllable.” They are also “controlled musical sequences that feel like straying from a tune but, when executed properly, help enhance the music.”
Runs are heavily associated with the R&B and gospel genres. Artists associated with the technique include Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, and Whitney Houston. Runs were also said to be similar to riffs, but they “aren’t meant to draw as much attention.”
As the commenter’s post pointed out, Filo became something of a fan-favorite during his time on American Idol. This made his elimination, following a performance of “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” from Dreamgirls, proved to be a shock.
At the time, Filo himself took to Instagram to share his feelings over his loss. As he wrote, all while thanking his fans and supporters, “And just like that, my [American Idol] journey comes to an end. It’s hard to put into words what this experience has meant to me.”
Filo Getting Eliminated Was A Shock To Many American Idol Fans
“The dream of being on the show felt far-off. And the fact that God gave me the opportunity to be a part of the Idol family is something that I will never take for granted.”
Taking to social media, fans have also been sharing their reaction to the idea that contestants are performing too many runs. A few fans even noted the heavy use of “runs” can make some singers seem dated, especially to the 1990s.
That said, some fans felt other singers can pull the technique off better than others. Some comments included:
- “Runs are a gimmick and IMO they are outdated. You never hear a professional singer doing that anymore. It feels like a 90s thing to me. I’d like to see this vocal parlor trick fade out of use.”
- “I personally tend to gravitate towards the singers who have a more modern sound. Some of them are incredibly talented but the songs choices and vocals remind me of what you’d hear in the department store in 1996. They’re good but uninteresting.”
- “This season feels like The Best Runs competition.”
- “It’s not that runs are bad thing, it’s highly skillful, however, for Filo, and some in the past. it’s that most of their runs were overused or misplaced. Kolbi actually has much better composure and balance with hers unlike Filo so that’s how you know the great talents.”
