Characters of the Week: From Soap Queens to Adults’ Fab Five, We Laughed, Cried, and Rallied!

Don’t you love it when your favorite characters on screen evoke a strong emotional response?

We mean really feel things: fear, joy, relief, confusion, and frustration.

The best characters evoke a range of human emotions as we experience their performances and respective arcs as viewers. And our characters of the week deliver on all fronts.

(Rafy/FX)

Fortunately, we have some heavy-hitters this week, ranging from soap queens making us cry to an eclectic group of twentysomethings making us laugh, reminisce, and smile.

There’s no shortage of standouts from the week.

    by Carissa Pavlica
  • Law & Order: Organized Crime Season 5 Episode 8 Delivers A Solid, If Typical, Case, But Please Tell Us This Character Isn’t Dying Soon
    by Jack Ori
  • Overcompensating and the Chaotic Truth of Being Queer in College
    by Tyler Cataldo

However, we’d love your input on the matter.

If we’ve missed someone or you’d like to elaborate on these choices, please feel free to comment and discuss with us!

Marlena Evans-Black (Days of our Lives)

We could write an entire column about the Brady-Black family who gathered to say their goodbyes to John, but let’s take a moment to honor Days of our Lives, Marlena Evans-Black (Deidre Hall).

She wasn’t acting as she cried that she couldn’t lose him. Marlena struggled between showing John her love in private moments and being strong for her children and grandchildren.

She’s always been a pillar of strength, but seeing her break down in Steve’s arms on Monday as they worried they’d lost John was heartbreaking.

It was so accurate when Marlena told John that he’d touched so many lives that everyone flew home to see him. This makes these moments bittersweet.

Carrie Brady-Reed (Days of Our Lives)

While every moment with John’s family was heartwarming, there is something special about Carrie because Christie Clark has played her since 1986 and has extra memories.

She made audiences cry as she recounted moments he made her feel loved, even though she wasn’t his biological daughter.

Seeing her was a wonderful addition, as she could comfort Marlena and remind her that John was best at being a dad, not a super spy.

There was not a dry eye after these two reunited.

Agnes (Nine Perfect Strangers)

(Reiner Bajo/Disney)

While Nine Perfect Strangers hinted that Agnes struggled with guilt in the premiere, that installment showed how she was traumatized when she couldn’t save a pregnant woman and her baby.

While the mother superior preached that it was God’s will and that she should pray for the woman’s soul, Agnes struggled with those platitudes and couldn’t forgive herself.

Masha’s psychedelic drugs brought these memories to the forefront, and Agnes melted down in a church, injuring herself, destroying property, and getting arrested.

The only good news was that after talking to Martin, she finally seemed calmer.

Maggie (The Walking Dead: Dead City)

The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 2 Episode 2 features big drama.
(AMC/Screenshot)

The latest entry in the undead Walking Dead franchise is getting stupider by the week, but at least Maggie is the one true constant on The Walking Dead: Dead City.

Maggie catches a lot of flak for her actions from viewers, but she’s making some good decisions this season, despite her mounting questions about whether her son, Hershel, is working with the bad guys.

  • Chicago PD: Can the Real Nina Chapman Please Stand Up?
    by Jasmine Blu
  • Carissa’s Corner: The Power of Long-Running TV — and Why We Should Revisit It Together
    by Carissa Pavlica

There’s every reason to believe that Maggie will make controversial decisions as we dive into the back half of the season.

But it’s perfectly in character, so what more could I want?

The Core Five Roomies (Adults)

(Rafy/FX)

Adults is an ensemble show at its core, and every character had their moment to shine in the 8-episode first season that dropped all episodes on Hulu this week.

As we said in our Adults Review, the series is a laugh-out-loud comedy feast, and the sharp writing and characters make this a comedy to add to your list if you haven’t yet checked it out. However, the show’s superpower lies in its strong cast and character dynamics, which are so effortlessly strong and really carry the first season through.

Could they use some more depth? Sure! But there’s a strength in the bonds of the five roommates at the core of this story, and the chemistry and comedic timing between them are enough to cover up any flaws.

  • Found Isn’t Finished Yet: What We Need in Season 3 (So Save It)!
    by Jasmine Blu
  • 17 Powerful Female-Centric Shows to Watch After The Handmaid’s Tale
    by Carissa Pavlica

From creating house rules together to throwing a dinner party, the friends struggle every step of the way, but there’s something relatable and sweet at times about watching them fail over and over again and still get back up to try again.

No one character really stands out more than the other, as they all have their moments, so if you’re composing a list of the “best,” you can’t leave anyone out.
