Dylan Dreyer has made a name for herself keeping audiences updated about the weather on Today. Recently, however, she has gotten viewers talking after using certain terminology on the show. However, many also took to social media to defend Dreyer.
Today‘s Dylan Dreyer Recently Discussed Winter Storms Stretching From New England To New Mexico
Dreyer is a meteorologist known for working with NBC News. Over the years, she has especially become known for her work with Today.
This includes being an anchor on Today‘s third hour and appearing as a weather correspondent. She is also known for working with The Weather Channel and NBC Nightly News.

On a recent episode of Today, airing January 23, Dreyer filled in for Al Roker. At the time, she discussed various winter storms that would impact dozens of states this upcoming weekend.
During the broadcast, Dreyer shared, “The storm is just now gathering itself. We’re tapping into some Pacific moisture. We’re going to get some Gulf of Mexico moisture, and we’re going to get the Arctic cold. So, look at how expansive these winter storm watch warnings, even ice storm warnings, are, stretching from New Mexico all the way up into New England.”
A clip of Dreyer’s report was also shared on Today‘s Instagram account. At the time, it was noted that around “170 million Americans” were anticipating the storm that could stretch around 2,000 miles.
While Some Criticized Dreyer, She Also Had A Few Defenders On Social Media
However, some viewers noted that one term used by Dreyer became outdated early last year. She referred to the Gulf of America by its previous name, the Gulf of Mexico. President Donald Trump officially changed the place’s name in early 2025.
Dreyer’s wording sparked mixed reactions online, with many reacting to the terminology used in the broadcast on social media, such as Instagram and YouTube. Some were quick to point out that she was using an outdated term.
That said, many came to her defense, sharing that they didn’t like the recent name change in the first place. Some comments included:
- “It’s the Gulf of Mexico, she called it by the correct name.”
- “You need to look at all your maps. It’s now called the Gulf of America.”
- “It’s Gulf of Mexico, Dylan is correct”
- “You mean Gulf of America!”
- “Gulf of America, ma’am.”
- “No it’s the gulf of America.”
- “Thank you, Dylan, for calling it by its proper name!”
