Today fans have noticed that Savannah Guthrie has taken a leave of absence from the show. That said, she recently made a surprising return during a recent episode. However, the moment proved to be an unconventional one, with Guthrie finding a new way to communicate.
Savannah Guthrie Announced Hiatus From Today Back In December
Guthrie joined NBC News in September 2007, serving as a legal analyst and correspondent. In 2011, she started working on Today, the network’s morning show.
The following year, it was announced that Guthrie would co-anchor Today, replacing Ann Curry. However, she recently took a break from the show.

Guthrie announced she would be taking a hiatus from the show on December 19th, undergoing treatment to treat vocal nodules and a polyp. This meant that she would be gone for several weeks, which was sad for both her colleagues and viewers.
However, during Today‘s January 12th, 2026, episode, Savannah called into the show to share a health update. She was interviewed remotely and utilized a whiteboard to communicate.
This was notably during the second week of Guthrie’s recovery. Greeting her fellow co-hosts, she wrote, “Hi! Miss you!”
Guthrie Shared When She Would Be Returning To The Show
Guthrie was also asked how she was doing. She replied with three simple words, “Good, boring, [and] quiet.” This caused Carson Daly to joke, “This feels like a Jimmy Fallon game show.”
Jenna Bush Hager also touched on the ways Guthrie tried to communicate, which was quite comical. She shared, “I was telling them how I called you the other week for you not to answer so your voicemail would play, but you answered and just clapped over and over again like a seal.”
Guthrie also shared how she’s been keeping busy during her time away from the show in her Brooklyn townhouse. This included journaling, reading, meditating, and “trying to grow as a human.” She also showed a few of her paintings, including one of the Today show logo.
According to Guthrie, she will return around a week after she finishes her recovery. Craig Melvin shared, “Can’t wait to get you back, SG.” Hoda Kotb was also present during the moment, as she had been in the studio to report on a segment for the U.S. gymnastics team.
