“I put it on canvas so that I can hold it by the throat!” Roadside has revealed the official trailer for an indie film titled Exhibiting Forgiveness, marking the feature directorial debut of real life artist Titus Kaphar. This originally premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and it also played at MoMA’s New Directors/New Films series, and a few other fests. It earned mostly positive reviews and plenty of buzz during the fest, especially for some of the performances and the artwork in it. André Holland stars in a powerful lead role as Tarrell, a Black artist on the path to success. His progress is derailed by an unexpected visit from his estranged father, named La’Ron, a recovering addict desperate to reconcile. Together, they’ll struggle & learn that forgetting might be a greater challenge than forgiving. The cast includes Andra Day, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, John Earl Jelks, Matthew Elam, and Ian Foreman. Reviews state the film “tackles the ghosts of the past, the scars of the present, and the promises of the future with nuance & grace.” A very moving, honest, triumphant film marking the debut of a talented new filmmaker. Take a look below.
Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Titus Kaphar’s Exhibiting Forgiveness, direct from YouTube:
Tarrell (Holland) is an admired American painter who lives with his wife, singer Aisha (Day), and their young son, Jermaine. Tarrell’s artwork excavates beauty from the anguish of his youth, keeping his past wounds at bay. His path to success is derailed by an unexpected visit from his estranged father, La’Ron (Jelks), a conscience-stricken man desperate to reconcile. His mother Joyce (Ellis-Taylor), a pious woman with a profound & joyful spirituality, hopes that Tarrell can open his heart to forgiveness, giving them all another chance at being a family. Tarrell & La’Ron learn that forgetting might be a greater challenge than forgiving in this raw, deeply moving film. Exhibiting Forgiveness is written and directed by the acclaimed American artist turned filmmaker Titus Kaphar, making his feature directorial debut after a few shorts. Produced by Stephanie Allain, Derek Cianfrance, Sean Cotton, Titus Kaphar, and Jamie Patricof. This first premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Roadside Attractions will debut Kaphar’s Exhibiting Forgiveness in select US theaters starting October 18th, 2024 coming up this fall. Interested?
