“Where do they come from?” “I vote for outer space. No way these are local boys.” Time for another Classic Trailer Rewatch session. This time we’re featuring the original trailers for the 1990 horror comedy monster movie classic Tremors. It first opened in January 1990 and made a fair amount at the box office, but only became a real hit later on home video. I grew up watching this all the time with my family – always having a blast with it. Tremors eventually inspired a whole bunch of sequels – Tremors 2: Aftershocks in 1996 all the way through Tremors 5 in 2015 and a few direct-to-video sequels recently, too. This first movie is still the OG best. A group of people ina small isolated desert town defend themselves against strange underground creatures which are killing them one by one. Starring Kevin Bacon, Fred Ward, Finn Carter, Michael Gross, and Reba McEntire, with an appearance by the iconic Victor Wong. It’s always pretty wild to go back and see what trailers were like in the 90s, usually with a booming voiceover. This is a fun one, for sure.
Here’s a few vintage trailers (+ original poster) for Ron Underwood’s film Tremors, direct from YouTube:
Repairmen Val McKee (Kevin Bacon) and Earl Bassett (Fred Ward) are tired of their dull lives in the small desert town of Perfection, Nevada. But just as the two try to skip town, they happen upon a series of mysterious deaths and a concerned seismologist (Finn Carter) studying unnatural readings coming from below the ground. With the help of an eccentric couple (Reba McEntire & Michael Gross), the group fights for survival against giant, worm-like monsters hungry for human flesh. Tremors is directed by American filmmaker Ron Underwood, his feature directorial debut before going on to make City Slickers (1991) and Heart and Souls (1993) after. The screenplay is written by S.S. Wilson & Brent Maddock; from a story by S.S. Wilson & Brent Maddock & Ron Underwood. Tremors originally opened in theaters in January 1990, earning a modest $16.7 million at the box office on a budget of around $6-10 million. It has since become a cult classic beloved by many horror fans. You can buy Tremors on 4K Blu-ray right here. Anyone’s favorite?
