“Moretti will be playing the greatest album of modern times…” 🎤 A24 has unveiled the official trailer for Opus, an exciting new horror thriller about a mega famous musician – kinda described as The Menu but for music, though he looks more like Charles Manson. This is premiering at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival on Monday next week, playing in the prestigious Midnight film section this year. An iconic pop star suddenly returns after decades missing. A young writer is invited to the remote compound of a legendary pop star who mysteriously disappeared some 30 years ago. Surrounded by the star’s cult of sycophants & intoxicated journalists, she finds herself in the middle of his twisted plan – in a cunning, tense game of cat and mouse. Opus stars Ayo Edebiri, John Malkovich as Moretti – the pop star, Juliette Lewis, Murray Bartlett, Amber Midthunder, Tatanka Means, Young Mazino, Tamera Tomakili, Stephanie Suganami, and Peter Diseth as Jorg. This looks crazy and intriguing! What is his plan all about? What is he doing at this compound with all of these devoted fans? What’s going to happen next? Have to watch this and find out.
Here’s the official trailer (+ posters) for Mark Anthony Green’s film Opus, direct from A24’s YouTube:
“Amidst eye-catching, synthy musical numbers and the enigmatic desert compound, the facade of civility gradually erodes between the pair, revealing the underbelly of a tense, psychosocial game of cat and mouse. Opus offers an electric, clever indictment of the literal cult of celebrity, presenting characters and dangers within a symphonic ambience — giving way to a foreboding ease through which power is generated and embedded within pop culture.” –Sundance Film Festival
Sundance: “A young writer is invited to the remote compound of a legendary pop star who mysteriously disappeared 30 years ago. Surrounded by the star’s cult of sycophants and intoxicated journalists, she finds herself in the middle of his twisted plan… Mark Anthony Green’s feature debut is a bold, fun, flashy pop-horror. Ayo Edebiri delivers as the meek yet hungry journalist Ariel — her unique charm radiating alongside a distinct final-girl prescience. John Malkovich is effervescent and hypnotic as Moretti, a deified global phenomenon making a dramatically malevolent reintroduction.” Opus is written and directed by American filmmaker Mark Anthony Green, making his feature directorial debut after a few other short films previously. Produced by Collin Creighton, Brad Weston, Poppy Hanks, Jelani Johnson, Mark Anthony Green, and Josh Bachove. This is premiering at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival this month. A24 will then debut Opus in theaters nationwide starting March 14th, 2025 coming soon. First impression? Look good?
