“This is a conclave, Aldo, not a war.” “It IS a war. And you have to commit to a side!” Focus Features has revealed the first official trailer for the film titled Conclave, a papacy thriller from the German filmmaker, Edward Berger, behind the Oscar-nominated All Quiet on the Western Front a few years ago. This will likely premiere at both the 2024 Venice & Telluride Film Festivals this fall, though they haven’t confirmed it just yet. Based on the book by Robert Harris: “The pope is dead. Behind the locked doors of the Sistine Chapel, one hundred and eighteen cardinals from all over the globe will gather to cast their votes in the world’s most secretive election. They are holy men. But they are also not immune to the human temptations of power and glory. And they are not above the tribalism and factionalism that consumes humanity. When all is said and done, one of them will become the most powerful spiritual figure on Earth.” Cardinal Lawrence (Fiennes) is tasked with leading one of the world’s most secretive and ancient events – selecting a new Pope, where he finds himself at the center of a major conspiracy. Conclave stars Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, and Isabella Rossellini. Yep this looks damn good! Keep an eye out for this one later in the fall.
Here’s the first official trailer for Edward Berger’s film Conclave, direct from Focus’ YouTube:
From director Edward Berger, Conclave follows one of the world’s most secretive and ancient events – selecting a new Pope. Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) is tasked with running this covert process after the unexpected death of the beloved Pope. Once the Catholic Church’s most powerful leaders have gathered from around the world and are locked together in the Vatican halls, Lawrence finds himself at the center of a conspiracy and discovers a secret that could shake the very foundation of The Church… Conclave is directed by the Academy Award-nominated German filmmaker Edward Berger, director of the films Strait-Jacket, Sidewalk Hotel, Smelly Dinners, Wanderbread, Gomez: Heads or Tails, Jack, All My Loving, and 2022’s All Quiet on the Western Front previously, as well as the TV series “Deutschland 83” & “Patrick Melrose”. The screenplay is written by Peter Straughan, based on the novel also titled “Conclave” by Robert Harris. Produced by Alice Dawson, Robert Harris, Juliette Howell, Michael Jackman, and Tessa Ross. This is expected to premiere at the 2024 Venice & Telluride Film Festivals this fall. Focus Features will debut Berger’s Conclave film in select US theaters starting November 1st, 2024 later this year. Look any good?
