“No one will survive the bloodythirst beast!” Iqiyi in China has released on streaming a fun creature feature called Sharktopus, another of these dumb shark concepts. This Chinese remake is riffing on the 2010 SyFy channel movie also called Sharktopus, produced by Julie and Roger Corman as one of the first low budget shark-mania movies. This new version is already out for streaming in China, though no info yet on when it will show up in other countries. This film tells the story of Fan Jingya (starring Michelle Ye), who devoted herself to researching a cure for Motor Neuron Disease to save her son. However, her boss, Mr. Chen, used her research to create an Octoshark, a highly intelligent hybrid of octopuses and sharks. And this caused a disaster (of course, it always does). Trapped on a cruise, Fan Jingya and her old flame, Lu Fei, have a battle of wits against the Octoshark. Also starring Luo Li-Qun, Chen Wen-Jun, and Lemon Li. This seems to have slightly better VFX, along with a bigger budget overall allowing them to get a bit crazier, though it still looks as cheesy and as ridiculous as the original. Reminds me more of that 90s movie Deep Rising. Dive in.
Here’s the first trailer (+ poster) for Hu Dong-Sheng & Shixing Xu’s Sharktopus, from YouTube (via BD):
The endless sea, the moving luxury cruise ships and the people celebrating in a carnival atmosphere. What seems to be an extremely calm and ordinary night is actually an undercurrent: beware of sneak attacks with tentacles because corners are difficult to hide in and the bloodthirsty monster Sharktopus is hunting humans… Sharktopus, also known as 章鲨 in Mandarin, is co-directed by Chinese filmmakers Hu Dong-Sheng (his feature directorial debut / also of the series 嘿!客栈) & Shixing Xu (director of the monster movies Crocodile Island and Monster’s Battleground previously). No screenplay credit yet. Exec produced by Lin Zhenzhao. Inspired by the 2010 American movie of the same name produced by Roger Corman & Julie Corman in 2010. This is being released in China by Iqiyi. Sharktopus just debuted for streaming on October 14th, 2023 this fall. No international release dates are set yet – stay tuned. Who wants to watch?
