“There’s gotta be somebody out there somewhere…” Strand Releasing is opening this new 4K restoration of the film Nowhere in select art house theaters – it’s showing now, check your local listings. The film also recently screened at Fantastic Fest last month. Nowhere was filmmaker Gregg Araki’s sixth feature at the time, showing at the Sitges & London Film Festivals that year after opening in the US. Strand also re-release Araki’s The Doom Generation earlier in 2023. Nowhere follows a day in the lives of a group of Los Angeles high school students and the strange lives they lead. Featuring an impressive ensemble cast from the period with Guillermo Diaz, Alan Boyce, Jeremy Jordan, Chiara Mastroianni, Debi Mazar, Christina Applegate, Scott Cain, Heather Graham, Ryan Phillippe, Traci Lords, Shannen Doherty, Rose McGowan, Jaason Simmons, and Jordan Ladd. This is dubbed a “4K Remixed & Remastered version” of the film that critics call “sexy, psychedelic, dementedly funny”. It’s an entire year of Araki rediscovery. “Nowhere is a sexy and wild ride, so buckle up, remain seated, and enjoy the ultimate fast trip to oblivion.”
Here’s the official 4K restoration trailer (+ poster) for Gregg Araki’s Nowhere, direct from YouTube:
Let the love feast begin. Nowhere’s weblike narrative charts a day in the hilarious and tragic life of Dark Smith (James Duval), a gorgeous, alienated 18-year-old obsessed with the End of the World and finding his one true and lasting love. The object of his affection, Mel (Rachel True), feels for him deeply but can’t commit herself to any one person or gender – splitting her time between Dark and her curvaceous, acid-tongued girlfriend, Lucifer (Kathleen Robertson). Dark, meanwhile, becomes enthralled by the beauteous Montgomery (Nathan Bexton), literally a vision to behold beneath the golden California sun. Nowhere is both written and directed by the visionary American indie filmmaker Gregg Araki, which was his sixth feature film at the time. It originally opened in theaters in May of 1997, and had a retrospective screening at Fantastic Fest 2023 last month. Strand will re-release Araki’s The Doom Generation in select US theaters starting on September 27th, 2023 – it’s playing now. For details, visit their official site. Have you seen it?
