“Something’s not right… and I can feel it.” Gravitas has unveiled the trailer for an indie horror movie titled Thirst, marking the directorial debut of musician / filmmaker Eric Owen – best known as the drummer with alternative rock duo Black Pistol Fire. Yet another new insomnia-related project (also check out Still Up from Apple TV+). In Thirst, insomnia spreads in a small town, causing fear and panic. As the situation becomes dire, two couples find salvation on an abandoned ranch – until nefarious characters descend upon the land, claiming it as their own. As always happens in these kind of apocalyptic films. After experiencing water problems in Austin, Owen says he was inspired to write this script. “I thought ‘what if the water was what gave us insomnia and we didn’t know it?’ and this set me on my path to writing Thirst.” The film stars Brian Villalobos, Michael Gmur, Scotty Walker, Cynthia Fray, Lori Kovacevich, and Federica Estaba Rangel. Nothing really new about this, much of the same we’ve seen before in so many other films.
Here’s the main official trailer (+ poster) for Eric Owen’s Thirst, direct from YouTube:
“I suffer from insomnia and often wondered if a movie could be made where insomnia spread throughout a small town. I also have a fear of not having clean drinking water (always have a canteen by my side), something that we take for granted in much of the developed world. But as the Western US runs out of water and the city of Austin has had three boil water notices in the last several years (the last of which actually took place on our final day of production), clean water scarcity has become all too real…” –Director Eric Owen
Insomnia induced psychosis spreads in a small town, leading friends to find refuge at an unused ranch in the country. When the others find out about the ranch a battle for the property takes place and chaos ensues. “What happens if something you need to live is also slowly killing you? This is my greatest fear and I had to bring it to the screen.” Thirst is written and directed and scored by newcomer filmmaker Eric Owen, making his feature directorial debut. Owen is also a drummer for the rock band Black Pistol Fire. It’s produced by Eric Owen and Josh Taylor. This hasn’t premiered at any fests or elsewhere, as far as we know. Gravitas releases Owen’s Thirst direct-to-VOD in the US starting September 5th, 2023. Anyone curious?
