“We have to stay and protect these guys, they’re your family now.” Blue Fox has revealed an official trailer for an animated adventure survival thriller titled Kensuke’s Kingdom, out to watch in theaters in October this fall. This first premiered at the 2023 Annecy & London Film Festivals last year, and it won a number of top prizes at the British Animation Awards, including Best Feature and Best Writing. Kensuke’s Kingdom is adapted from the classic book by Michael Morpurgo (also of “War Horse”). Young Michael, shipwrecked on a remote island, must learn to adapt to his new life alone. Over time he feels another presence, learning that this world is home to both unimaginable danger and beauty – he encounters an old Japanese man named Kensuke also living on the island. A gripping animated adaptation of a beloved novel. This animated family adventure features the voices of Oscar winner Cillian Murphy, and Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins, with Oscar nominee Ken Watanabe, Raffey Cassidy, and featuring Aaron MacGregor as Michael. It looks like a beautifully envisioned tale of survival & wonder, all about appreciating the magic of life of this planet.
Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Neil Boyle & Kirk Hendry’s Kensuke’s Kingdom, from YouTube:
A young boy and his family set off on a sailing trip of a lifetime until a violent storm erupts, sweeping Michael (voiced by Aaron MacGregor) and his dog overboard. After washing up on a remote island, terrified, they struggle to survive and adjust to life alone, One day, Michael discovers he is not alone when he is confronted by a mysterious Japanese man who has lived there secretly since World War II, angry that Michael has arrived. However, as dangerous invaders threaten their fragile island paradise, Michael and the old man, Kensuke, join forces to save their secret world. Kensuke’s Kingdom is co-directed by two animation filmmakers Neil Boyle & Kirk Hendry, both making their feature directorial debut after a few other short films previously. The screenplay is written by Frank Cottrell-Boyce. Based on the best-selling novel of the same name written by Michael Morpurgo. Produced by Camilla Deakin, Ruth Fielding, Anne-Laure Labadie, Martin Metz, Adrian Politowski, Sarah Radclyffe, and Barnaby Spurrier. Blue Fox Ent. will debut Kensuke’s Kingdom in US + Canadian theaters starting on October 18th, 2024 this fall. Intrigued?
