“Katie’s the biggest jackpot of all time. Just find her!” Prime Video has debuted the trailer for a goofy dark comedy called Jackpot!, the latest movie from comedy filmmaker Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, The Heat, Spy, Ghostbusters, A Simple Favor). Set in a near future where a killer lottery has been created in economically struggling California. This has one of the ultimate concepts that acts as a metaphor for America: in the near future, a “Grand Lottery” has been newly established in California – the catch: anyone can kill the winner before sundown to legally claim their multi-billion dollar jackpot. So it’s kind of like The Purge mashed up with Lottery Ticket? “You can’t win if you don’t play.” Feig’s Jackpot! stars Awkwafina and John Cena, along with appearances by MGK, Simu Liu, Ayden Mayeri, Seann William Scott, Dolly de Leon, Donald Elise Watkins, and Sam Asghari. This definitely looks like a streaming comedy – a cheesy fight movie with all the usual tropes and nothing actually funny to offer. Unfortunately… I’ll be skipping this one.
Here’s the main official trailer (+ poster) for Paul Feig’s Jackpot!, direct from PV’s YouTube:
In the near future, a ‘Grand Lottery’ has been newly established in California – the catch: you can also kill the winner before sundown to legally claim their multi-billion jackpot prize. When Katie Kim (Awkwafina) moves to Los Angeles, she mistakenly finds herself with the winning ticket. Desperate to survive the hordes of jackpot hunters, she reluctantly joins forces with amateur lottery protection agent Noel Cassidy (John Cena) who will do everything in his power to get her to sundown in exchange for just a piece of her prize. However, Noel must face off with his slick rival Louis Lewis (Simu Liu), who also seeks to collect Katie’s commission at all costs. Jackpot! is directed by the American comedy filmmaker Paul Feig, director of the movies I Am David, Unaccompanied Minors, Bridesmaids, The Heat, Spy, Ghostbusters, A Simple Favor, Last Christmas, and The School for Good & Evil previously. The screenplay is written by Rob Yescombe. Produced by Paul Feig, Laura Fischer, Jeff Kirschenbaum, and Joe Roth. Amazon will debut Feig’s Jackpot! movie streaming on Prime Video starting August 15th, 2024 later this summer. Who wants to watch this?
