“It’s important to finish things once we start them…” Vudu has revealed an official trailer for an indie crime comedy called LaRoy, Texas, formerly known as just LaRoy. This is officially set for a release starting in April, streaming directly on the Vudu service if anyone is interested in this tomfoolery. When Ray discovers that his wife is cheating on him, he decides he’s going to kill himself. His plans suddenly change when a stranger mistakes him for a low-rent hitman. Broke and depressed, Ray is mistaken for a dangerous hitman and given an envelope of cash. Along with his P.I. friend Skip, he must escape the actual hitman to make it out of LaRoy alive. Starring John Magaro (from Past Lives & First Cow) as Ray, Steve Zahn as his kooky P.I. friend, Dylan Baker, Galadriel Stineman, Matthew Del Negro, Bob Clendenin, Brad Leland, Megan Stevenson, & Emily Pendergast. This premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last year but didn’t make much of an impact, which is why it’s going direct-to-VOD to watch soon. At least Zahn looks hilarious.
Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Shane Atkinson’s LaRoy, Texas, direct from Vudu’s YouTube:
Ray (John Magaro) is an ordinary man who runs an ordinary business in the fictional town of LaRoy, Texas. He longs for his wife Stacy-Lynn’s affections, but they are being given to someone else. As if this love triangle weren’t complicated enough, a third character also enters the conversation: Skip, a private detective who is mocked by the local police force and always dressed in the latest cowboy fashions. Skip shows Ray pictures of his wife entering a motel room, whereupon Ray decides to quickly put an end to his suffering. But just as Ray is about to kill himself, a mysterious man intervenes, asking Ray to kill someone else instead, by the very next day; money is handed over, but instructions are not, turning this man who no longer wants to live into the protagonist of a freewheeling adventure. LaRoy, Texas (aka just LaRoy) is written and directed by writer / filmmaker Shane Atkinson, making his feature directorial debut after a few shorts and the screenplay for Poms previously. This first premiered at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival last year. Vudu debuts Atkinson’s LaRoy, Texas streaming on Vudu starting April 12th, 2024 this spring.
